Jose Mourinho has revealed that Oliver Skipp has designs on leaving Tottenham Hotspur on loan this summer.
The 19-year-old is one of the most exciting players to come through Spurs’ academy in recent years but the youngster has been limited to only 62 minutes of Premier League football this season.
With Tottenham struggling this season, there’s less room for experimentation and therefore less room for the teenager to stake a claim in their midfield on a regular basis.
Consequently, Mourinho has said that Skipp has revealed his ambition to leave North London on a short-term basis for next season.
But the Portuguese is adamant that it’s only to aid his development, claiming that he could very easily come and captain Tottenham at some point in the future.
He told Football London: “In his mind he wants to go on loan, six months, the whole season.
“He feels that he needs that, I also feel that would be good for his evolution, so maybe that is the direction we go. I think he can be more than a player, he can be a future captain here.”
What a ringing endorsement this is from Mourinho, but Tottenham fans won’t be surprised.
They’ve seen what he can do, and the hardcore supporters, who watch Under-23 games, will be even more familiar with Skipp’s potential.
Can he captain the Lilywhites? Potentially, but he must take it slow and crowbar his way into the senior side on a regular basis first.
