Prolific Almeria striker Darwin Nunez has been compared to Edinson Cavani after being linked with an £18 million move to Southampton, with Mariano Bogliacino hailing the forward in conversation with Radio Kiss Kiss.

A 21-year-old from the Spanish second tier certainly has a lot to live up to.

Some of the finest centre-forwards in South American football have emerged from the land of Garra warriors, with Diego Forlan, Luis Suarez and Cavani establishing themselves as some of the most feared forwards on the continent.

With just one international cap under his belt so far, Nunez has a long way to go if he is to follow in the footsteps of PSG’s all-time record goal-scorer.

But, according to former Napoli winger Bogliacino, there are plenty of stylistic similarities between and up-and-coming youngster and a battle-scared veteran.

“Nunez exploded two years ago in Uruguay,” Bogliacino says of the ex-Penarol prospect.

“He is a fast, very strong attacker. He has physical strength and good instincts, like Cavani. He can thrive in the penalty area.”

Nunez has scored 15 goals for a nouveau-riche Almeria side in 2019/20, firing them into contention for an automatic promotion place in La Liga 2.

But regardless of whether the Andalusians seal their place in the top flight, Nunez could be rewarded with an £18 million move to the Premier League or Serie A.

Calciomercato claim that Southampton want Nunez to ease the goal-scoring burden on Danny Ings, although Napoli will give him the chance to follow in Cavani’s footsteps at the Stadio San Paolo.
