Reported Wolverhampton Wanderers target Otavio inspired Porto to the Primeira Liga title on Wednesday night and, speaking to Tribuna, he admits seizing the crown back from bitter rivals Benfica is a ‘special’ feeling.

If the long-serving Brazilian is set to bid farewell to the picturesque Estadio do Dragao this summer, then it is fair to say he has just signed off in style.

Otavio was the best player on the pitch as Porto tasted glory last night, carving out his 12th assist of an exceptional season as Sergio Conceicao’s side defeated Sporting Lisbon 2-0 on their own hallowed turf.

The Mirror (28 June, page 66) reports that Otavio could become the latest Primeira Liga starlet to join Wolves’ already Iberian-influenced squad in a £15 million deal this summer.

And, if he is on his way to Molineux, the 25-year-old play-maker will be departing with the sweet taste of success in his mouth.

“Winning is always special. Being champion for FC Porto is always special. We made, we were 7 points behind Benfica and being able to become the champions with two games to spare… I think we deserved it, we battled all year, also in quarantine. It’s very special,” says Otavio, who was certainly aided by a dramatic collapse from 2019 winners Benfica.

“In the first year (2018) we were champions but I didn’t play much. Last year I played more, but we were not champions. This season I tried to do both – be champion and play a lot – and I played a lot games and I’m happy with that.”

Speaking last month, Otavio’s agent admitted that negotiations over a new contract with Porto ‘had not gone well’ with his current deal due to expire in 2021.

The South American, he added, was looking for a new adventure. Wolves can certainly provide that.
