Paul Merson has disagreed with the talk that Manchester City are favourites for the Premier League title ahead of Liverpool next season, as he told Soccer Saturday (11/07/20 at 12:50 pm).

The outspoken pundit thinks the bookmakers have got it ‘horribly wrong’ to place Pep Guardiola’s side as favourites as he thinks Liverpool have the ability to ‘churn out’ results, which their rivals don’t.

City have produced a number of indifferent displays this term – recently they thumped Liverpool, Newcastle and lately Brighton. But equally falling to a narrow defeat to Southampton in between.

After being told by Soccer Saturday host, Jeff Stelling, that City are favourites for the title next season, this is how Merson reacted:

“I don’t see that,” Merson told Soccer Saturday. “I only don’t see that because of what’s happened in the last week. A prime example. They go to Southampton and lose. And Liverpool played badly and win. They churn games out.

“For me, I think they have got that horribly wrong.”

There’s no doubt that Guardiola has more squad depth than the newly crowned champions.

But when it comes to grinding out results and having a strong defence then Jurgen Klopp beats his managerial counterpart.

Perhaps City’s transfer business in the summer – signing a centre-back – could be key to how they perform during the next campaign.
