Netflix may have only just released season 1 of Japan Sinks: 2020, but fans are already wondering whether or not the anime will return for season 2.

Let’s get this out in the open straight away, Japan Sinks: 2020 is nothing short of a masterpiece in visual storytelling.

After just five minutes of episode 1, we are violently thrown into the aftermath of a devastating earthquake and from there, it only goes from one gut-wrenching scene to another.

Yes, it may be science fiction and there will be some people who think that anime can’t pull on the heart-strings compared to live-action shows, but Japan Sinks: 2020 is the most honest reflection of natural tragedy I’ve seen in a long time.

However, now that the dust has settled on season 1, fans are left wondering if and when the series could make a return.

Will there be a Japan Sinks: 2020 season 2?

  • At the time of writing, Japan Sinks: 2020 has not been renewed for a second season, nor has it been cancelled by Netflix.

Although, if we are being honest, we don’t think that Japan Sinks: 2020 will be making a return to Netflix. The show works best as a one-season series, hence the ‘2020’ for this year and the relation to the Tokyo Olympics, which were scheduled for this year. Plus, the story wraps everything up quite nicely and you wouldn’t want the same story arc to be dragged into another season.

One of the reasons why season 1 worked so well is that the natural disasters going on are all believable, this is what drives that emotional storytelling that the show got so right. We understand why and how these events are happening, which makes everything that happens throughout season 1 so compelling. If the show was renewed for a second instalment, then will Japan sink again? That’s a bit predictable.

However, there is always the chance that Netflix could indeed commission another season of the anime. What’s more, the original 1973 novel that served as inspiration for the series does have a sequel, Nihon chinbotsu dai ni bu (translated as Japan Sinks Part 2).

When would season 2 release?

  • As there is no confirmation that the series will return, there is no information as to when a second season would be released.

However, if the anime is renewed for a second season, then fans can expect an early-2021 release. Although there is always the chance that Netflix would push the premiere date back a few months to coincide with the new re-scheduled Tokyo Olympics in the summer.

On the other hand, there is a chance that the production of a second season will be severely hampered by the global coronavirus pandemic. If the show is renewed by Netflix, a mid-2021 release date is our more realistic prediction.

What could season 2 be about?

Unfortunately, a potential plot for the second season of Japan Sinks: 2020 is a difficult one to predict as the story was pretty nicely wrapped up in season 1. However, if we are to make a guess as to what story season 2 could tell, my argument would be for a spin-off within the same disaster.

Season 2 could still focus on the events that we see but focus on another group of survivors. These new protagonists could either be people completely new in another area of the country, or possibly a side-character from season 1.

Did someone else from Ayumu’s athletic team survive and have to make their way home alone? What happened to the people who went east in episode two? Or that young boy who Mari saved from the aeroplane?

Personally, I think that a storyline focusing on a brand-new set of characters would be more compelling, but it would be whether or not the writers could make the same natural disaster still feel fresh. The most obvious way that they could do this would be the tsunami that we see at the plane in episode 1, but only time will tell.

We will bring you updates on Japan Sinks: 2020 season 2 as and when information is confirmed.
