The Old Guard has hit Netflix so let’s explore the backstory of Andromache of Scythia according to the comic book. Charlize Theron shines in the role.
You guessed it… the superhero sub-genre still shows no signs of fading into obscurity and continues to delight fans everywhere.
Of course, it’s not just about the MCU; there are plenty of exciting comic book adaptations still making their way to screens and one of them is The Old Guard.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the film is based on the comic book of the same name and chronicles immortal mercenaries who are challenged when their secret to eternal life is faced with being unearthed.
Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) shines in the lead as Andy and we’re here to plunge into her backstory.
The Old Guard: Andromache of Scythia
The character of Andromache of Scythia was born as far back as 4500 BC, according to the comic book.
She was born in Eurasia, which was Scythia under the Roman Empire and belonged to a female tribe of warriors. Taken in after her mother died, the elders trained her in combat and she grew to become a fearsome and skilled fighter.
Due to her advanced skills, the elder who took her in eventually grew jealous and betrayed her, resulting in her tragic death on the battlefield at the hands of their enemies.
However, she was resurrected and left to face the enemies, who she discovered had won against her tribe. Taking action, she saved her allies from their clutches and became the leader of the tribe in the process.
Although maintaining the position for hundreds of years, she eventually abandoned her post to explore other cultures and so forth in hopes of fending off loneliness. Over the course of her many adventures, she was plagued by a recurring dream of a woman she had never known.
Chronicling Andy’s journey
Fast forward and she then dreams of a man, who she eventually meets; he had been dreaming of her too. She and Lykon were both immortals and got together, but this didn’t stop her dreaming of the other woman.
Her new companion wouldn’t accompany her to search for the mysterious stranger, so she went it alone. Fortunately, she found the woman – Noriko – and used her skills to seek out another two immortals: Yusuf and Nicolo.
Together they formed a family but Lykon was later shot and failed to reawaken. As for Noriko, she was claimed by the ocean in the grip of a storm.
The realisation that they may still die affected their behaviour and they integrated the best they could within society, occasionally moving around.
Later on, they recruited a soldier named Sébastien, which according to Movie Comics Who’s Who was during the Napoleonic Wars. The four of them used their powers to fight a vast array of battles and conflicts throughout history.
As they reached the 2000s, Andromache took the name of Andy and the mercenaries went public about their team.
