Monaco coach Robert Moreno has expressed his desire to keep Wissam Ben Yedder in the Principality amid reported interest from Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, while speaking to Goal.
To be honest, it is about time this penalty-box poacher was courting interest from some of the Premier League’s biggest and best.
Ben Yedder has been one of the most ruthless finishers in European football for three or four years but it is only now, at the age of 29, that he is being linked with clubs like Arsenal and 2019 European champions Liverpool.
L’Equipe reported in April that the France international’s remarkable work inside the 18-yard box had caught the eye of Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp, not to mention a Spurs side desperate to ease the burden on captain Harry Kane.
But, after providing 19 goals and nine assists in 2019/20, Moreno is understandably desperate to avoid losing his top scorer.
“It’s clear that Wissam Ben Yedder is one of the most important players in this project,” the former Spain coach says. “He was the top scorer last season with (Kylian) Mbappe.
“All coaches want a player like him. It’s very important to me to have Wissam Ben Yedder and I said that to the club.
“I know that during the transfer window the situation can change at any time, (but) the most important thing for me is to keep Wissam.”
Unfortunately for Moreno, who only took charge of the 2017 Ligue 1 champions in December, Ben Yedder’s future could be taken out of his hands.
ESPN reported a few weeks ago that Monaco, after being hit hard financially of late, would consider selling for £25 millon.
