Newcastle United have had a fantastic season so far in the Premier League. The Magpies are closer to sixth place than they are to the relegation zone and it’s all thanks to Steve Bruce.

The Newcastle boss wasn’t really welcomed at St. James’ Park when he was first appointed but he has done a brilliant job this term. If there was one criticism that can be levied on the Magpies, it’s their lack of goals.

Bruce’s side have scored just 35 times in 33 games this season, only Sheffield United have a worse record among the top 13 teams in the Premier League table.

Newcastle forked out a staggering £40 million (BBC) on Joelinton last summer to solve their goal-scoring woes but sadly, the Brazilian has struggled.

Joelinton has scored just twice in the league and just four in all competitions this season. That is a terrible record for someone who cost so much money and Newcastle will be planning to bring in another striker to help him out.

Former Celtic, Bolton and Blades forward Andy Walker, who is now a pundit for Sky Sports, has named two strikers Newcastle United can look at this summer who are an upgrade to their club record signing.

He wrote on Sky Sports: I covered Newcastle against West Ham for Sky on Sunday and I have no doubts at all that both Edouard and Morelos would certainly offer a far bigger threat than Newcastle’s Brazilian signing Joelinton, for example.”

“Scottish football is a different marketplace of course, but sums of anywhere around the £20 million mark for two top-class goalscorers will have both boardrooms on high alert.”

Either striker would be a brilliant signing for Newcastle

Edouard and Morelos were both the standout strikers in the Scottish Premiership last term. Both strikers have also reportedly been on Newcastle’s radar which could make a summer move for at least one of them possible.

The Scottish Mail (page 131, May 17, 2020) claimed that the Magpies were plotting a £25 million bid for Edouard who scored 27 goals and has provided 19 assists in all competitions for Celtic last term.

The Northern Echo claimed back in December that Newcastle were interested in Rangers’ Morelos who outscored Edouard by two goals in all competions for Steven Gerrard’s side.

Both strikers will be an interesting option for Newcastle this summer but their transfer activities will have to wait until their takeover saga comes to a conclusion.
