Manchester City fans are not at all keen on the idea of John Stones starting against Newcastle United this evening.

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Stones will be handed a rare start against Newcastle tonight.

He said to the club’s official Twitter account: “I saw Eric Garcia and Aymeric Laporte did well together against Arsenal and wanted to give them more minutes to play together. But I will give you some more news: tomorrow he [Stones] is going to play.”

The comments have caused concern with City fans, who now feel that Newcastle could cause an upset.

The reaction to Stones’s inclusion rather sums up just how far his stock has fallen in recent times.

The England international simply has not been able to eradicate errors from his game and his future at City now looks very uncertain.

If Newcastle are to cause Stones any concerns they will surely have to show more attacking intent than they did in their most recent meeting though.

When Newcastle met City in the FA Cup last month, Steve Bruce’s side adopted a very defensive approach, and did little to trouble the City backline.

On that occasion City picked up a 2-0 victory, with goals from Kevin de Bruyne and Raheem Sterling dumping Newcastle out of the competition.
