Rapid Vienna captain Stefan Schwab wants to move to England this summer with Queens Park Rangers, Blackburn Rovers and Bristol City all interested in the experienced free agent, according to the Mail.

At the age of 29, a once-capped Austria international is fully aware that time is running out if he wants to prove himself on British shores.

Schwab has spent the last six years at Rapid.

And, such is his desire for a fresh start, the influential skipper has apparently turned down the chance to extend his contract as he plans to leave his homeland for the first time.

The Mail claims that Schwab has offers from clubs in Italy and Germany but England is his preferred destination.

And the dynamic central midfielder is certainly a risk worth taking, given that he produced nine goals and ten assists for title-chasing Rapid Vienna during an impressive 2019/20 campaign.

According to Rapid’s sporting director Zoran Barisic, however, speculation that the Austrian giants did not have the funds to offer Schwab a new contract are wide of the mark.

“That is nonsense. Of course, we have to save on the salary structure. But the talks with Schwab are very good, with mutual appreciation,” Barisic explained to Krone.

For now, however, Schwab is still yet to sign a new deal at his current club.

With a number of British-based teams stepping up their interest, Rapid may face the unwelcome task of replacing their star man and captain over the summer.
