Everton suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham in what was a really underwhelming game. The Toffees looked average for most parts of the clash and performances of that sort will not get them up to one of the European places.

Carlo Ancelotti started with a midfield of Andre Gomes and Gylfi Sigurdsson with Tom Davies out of position on the right.

That proved to be a poor decision by the experienced Italian, as Tottenham found it extremely easy to dominate the midfield.

Neither Gomes nor Sigurdsson are known for their ball-winning ability. Davies, who usually does the job, struggled as well on the right side of midfield which proved to be the reason why the Toffees came out of the game with no points.

Everton need wins to have any chance of making it into Europe next season. The same midfield duo as today will cost them in the coming games and some Toffees fans have demanded a change.

Ancelotti played Mason Holgate in defensive midfield earlier in the season. The Englishman was brilliant for the Toffees in that game against Manchester United but, surprisingly, he was never used there again.

Holgate has been one of Everton’s best players this season. He is undoubtedly the club’s best centre-half at the moment, but he might just be their best defensive midfielder as well.

Everton fans took to Twitter to urge Ancelotti to deploy Holgate in the centre of the park in the coming games. His passing, as well as his ability to win the ball back, could help the Toffees win the midfield battle and eventually the game as well.

Here is how a few Everton fans reacted on Twitter:
