Ever since Left 4 Dead 2 was released back in 2009, fans of the co-op zombie shoot-em-up fest have been hoping for more — and now they’ve got it.

Turtle Rock Studios, who you may know as the developers behind the wildly successful original Left 4 Dead game, have released a stunning piece of concept art for their new game, and apparent spiritual successor to L4D, Back 4 Blood.

The concept art, which was revealed on Twitter, strikes more than a passing resemblance to the studios’ other popular zombie game, if only in theme.

The art seemingly depicts a run-down human settlement surrounded by home-made defenses like tire traps, wooden barricades and spikes. Adorning the entrance to the settlement, in giant painted letters, is the word “hope”.

The image could suggest a game in which defence is as important as escape, and where players will be attempting to force zombie hordes into traps as well as into firefights.

For now, though, Turtle Rock has offered no new details about the game, so this is all speculation for now.

Back 4 Blood release date: When and where can I play it?

  • Turtle Rock Studios has not yet given a concrete release date for Back 4 Blood.

The developers, however, did indicate that parts of the game were already in a playable state. All things considered, the earliest we can expect to see ‘Back 4 Blood’ is late 2020, with a 2021 release being much more likely.

The developers have also confirmed that Back 4 Blood will initially launch on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Elsewhere, a Nintendo Switch version has not been ruled out, and we may see the game arrive on Nintendo’s handheld console hybrid somewhere down the line.

What can we expect from Back 4 Blood?

  • A campaign, PvP mode, and playable, special zombies called “Mutations” have also all been confirmed for the game so far.

Back 4 Blood was first announced over a year ago with Turtle Rock describing it as a “next-gen cooperative FPS” where players would be able to “shoot up a lot of zombies”.

“Back 4 Blood is our own brand new, original IP,” Turtle Rock Studios said about the game.

“You’ll be able to shoot up a lot of zombies like in Left 4 Dead, but there’s a whole lot of new stuff in Back 4 Blood which makes it unique.”

HITC’s opinion:

The Left 4 Dead series is all about escape, with the party trying to find a safe haven right after the virus starts turning everyone into ravenous corpses, but the concept art and even the title itself, Back 4 Blood, makes me think this time it’s going to be about fighting back.

Maybe we’ll be patrolling, clearing areas and chipping away at the horde instead of constantly running to evacuation points. Only time will tell — bring on the trailer…
