The Last Of Us Part 2 is the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive at launch. However, despite this incredible feat and all its 10/10 reviews, Naughty Dog’s sequel remains massively divisive amongst the gaming community. But, regardless of how bad or disappointing anyone feels the game is, it’s incredibly tragic to see that Laura Bailey – the actress responsible for bringing Abby to life – has been receiving death threats on Twitter.
Abby was introduced to The Last Of Us Part 2 in 2017 and no one had any issues with the character back then because people presumed she was Ellie’s mum and that the scene was a flashback. However, thanks to massive leaks (many which turned out to be true), people quickly turned on the character due to her spoiled actions towards the series’ main co-star.
Thanks to the heinous actions performed by Abby in-game, some people haven’t been able to separate their hate towards fiction from reality and Laura Bailey has received death threats.
**Spoilers for The Last Of Us Part 2 beyond this point**
The Last Of Us 2: Laura Bailey receives death threats
Laura Bailey has received death threats for playing Abby in The Last Of Us Part 2.
Responsible for bringing Abby to life in The Last of Us Part 2, Laura Bailey has shared screenshots of death threats that have been sent to her as messages on Twitter.
From the contents of the messages, it’s apparent that the senders were angry about Abby killing Joel.
The implication is that Laura Bailey ruined the sequel by playing Abby, but there’s no justifying death threats regardless of how ‘passionate’ people believe they are.
Since Laura Bailey shared the messages, Naughty Dog have condemned harassment aimed towards their employees.
Why do people hate Abby in The Last Of Us Part 2?
Lots of people hate Abby in The Last Of Us Part 2 simply because she kills Joel.
However, people also hate Abby because the game forces players to control her for nearly as many hours in The Last Of Us Part 2 as Ellie.
In addition to the above, there are also some people who loathe Laura Bailey’s character because she’s buff. This has resulted in arguments that it’s unrealistic for a woman to be muscular in a post-apocalyptic landscape, but some have attributed the complaints to a lack of diversity for female bodies in video games.
There were also misconceptions before the launch of Naughty Dog’s sequel that Abby is transgender, and there are some phobic people who still believe this despite it factually not being true.
But, regardless of why people don’t like Abby, it’s completely wrong to send death threats to Laura Bailey, anyone working at Naughty Dog, or people on Twitter who simply enjoy the character.
The Last Of Us Part 2 is nothing more than a fictional game, and – while legitimate criticism and praise should be encouraged – death threats are never warranted.
