Some Sunderland fans are urging their club to act after Bristol City announced their retained list on Thursday.
Former City captain Bailey Wright heads the list of players leaving Ashton Gate, where he spent three-and-a-half years.
But Wright’s release will come as little surprise to those of a Robins persuasion, with the Australian having spent the final five months of his contract on loan at Sunderland.
Wright appeared on just five occasions for the Mackems, whose season was curtailed amid the global health crisis.
But the following Sunderland supporters were clearly impressed by what they saw of the 27-year-old centre-back.
Here’s how they responded to Bristol City’s announcement on Twitter…
Sunderland released four players in Wright’s position at the end of last month.
And another one, Tom Flanagan, could still leave amid reported interest from Championship clubs, which would increase Phil Parkinson’s need to strengthen at the heart of his side’s defence.
As a result of his free transfer status, Wright can now move clubs immediately – although he cannot be registered to play in competitive fixtures until the 2020-21 season.
