Although the first came out over a decade ago, The Simpsons Movie 2 is still something fans are interested in seeing. What’s happening with it?

There’s no place like Springfield.

From South Park to Rick and Morty, there is no shortage of beloved animated sitcoms, but none are arguably quite so admired as The Simpsons.

First arriving on screens back in 1989, Matt Groening’s modern comedy classic has been entertaining audiences ever since, even earning its own film – The Simpsons Movie – back in 2007.

The film was a critical and financial success, but surprisingly, it was never followed up with a sequel, despite there being much hearsay and speculation immediately afterwards.

Where do sequel prospects stand at present?

The Simpsons Movie 2: Confirmed?

  • Yes, The Simpsons Movie 2 has actually been in development since August 2018. However, the film’s producer revealed earlier this year that they’re still in very early stages.

In conversation with Slash Film, The Simpsons showrunner Al Jean commented on the status of the project: “We would love to do one for Disney but it’s not like it’s happening next week or next year.”

So, while it shouldn’t be ruled out, don’t expect it to arrive anytime soon!

Additionally, he commented: “We certainly don’t need to have more Simpsons out there just for the money or to have additional material. We would do it if we thought it was a great story and we wanted to tell it.”

What could we expect from a sequel?

It’s hard to know what to expect, but interestingly, we know what not to expect…

While in conversation, Al confirmed to fans that another movie wouldn’t be a direct sequel to The Simpsons Movie, but rather, it’s own stand-alone story.

So, that probably means no domes, and more importantly, perhaps no spiderpig?

By the sounds of things, they don’t have a story locked in, although Al gives the impression that they’ll be into production once the team is enthusiastic about an idea.

Whether it’s two years down the line or ten, we’re just glad to hear that they’re still in stages to make it, no matter how early they may be.

Fans still want it!

It seems that audiences display more and more love for The Simpsons Movie with every passing year.

So, it’s hardly surprising to see that people still clamour for a sequel.
