Liverpool are set to offer a first-ever professional contract to Billy Koumetio with Jurgen Klopp a big fan of the teenage defender, according to FootMercato.
While a whole host of fresh-faced teenagers have been handed their senior debuts by Liverpool this season, from Jake Cain to Harvey Elliott, Neco Williams to Luis Longstaff, a 17-year-old Frenchman has had to be patient thus far.
Koumetio did not feature in that bizarre EFL Cup clash with Aston Villa in December, nor did he make an appearance as Neil Critchley’s crop of kids stunned Shrewsbury Town two months later.
But don’t make the mistake in assuming the Lyon-born giant is not highly regarded within the walls of Melwood.
A converted winger, 6ft 4ins Koumetio looks a natural at centre-half these days and it seems only a matter of time before he is donning the famous red shirt at Anfield.
As FootMercato point out, Klopp is a big fan.
And, impressed with his leadership skills and ‘enormous potential’, reports from France suggest that Koumetio will be signing on the dotted line very soon with professional terms a reward for a fine season at U18 level.
“He has settled in well and he is a real imposing figure at centre-back,” Liverpool youth coach Barry Lewtas told the club’s official website. “He certainly looks like a centre-back, he is aggressive and he defends on the front foot.
“He works ever so hard in training, he’s keen to develop and he knows he’s still got a lot to do. He is good in possession, so he helps us with the way we want to play and he has the ground work for us to do some really good work with him.”
