Want to see your designs in space? NASA have just launched the competition for you.
NASA are calling out for designers to help with a rather unique challenge. They are looking for someone who can design a toilet that works in microgravity and on the moon.
The space agency is currently preparing for another journey to the moon, a mission complete by 2024. In this time, they want to develop a ‘Lunar Loo’ and so have launched a challenge to find one of the best designs.
Obviously it didn’t take long for the internet to pick up on the Lunar Loo Challenge and there have been a string of hilarious solutions for the space toilet. But amidst all of the silliness, there has also been some sheer invention. Check out some of the best designs we’ve found for NASA’s Lunar Loo Challenge here.
NASA calls out for Lunar Loo Challenge
On Thursday, June 25th 2020, NASA announced the Lunar Loo Challenge.
On the NASA website, they published the following statement:
“NASA is calling on the global community for their novel design concepts for compact toilets that can operate in both microgravity and lunar gravity. These designs may be adapted for use in the Artemis lunar landers that take us back to the Moon. Although space toilets already exist and are in use (at the International Space Station, for example), they are designed for microgravity only. NASA’s Human Landing System Program is looking for a next-generation device that is smaller, more efficient, and capable of working in both microgravity and lunar gravity. “
The challenge has two entry categories: a Technical category and Junior category.
The winner of the Technical category could win $35,000 (approximately £28,000, A$51,000) for the top design. The Junior prize is public recognition from NASA and from HeroX, as well as a certificate.
The closing date for submissions is August 17th, 2020.
Best NASA toilet designs
We did some digging on Twitter to see what designs people had already come up with and shared. Given that there’s $35,000 at stake, we’re surprised everyone has been public with their ideas!
One of the strongest designs had already been thought up by Gish years ago. They shared their ‘The Better Astronaut Toilet’ with the caption “Been there, done that. Hey @nasa! Call us?”
A fan of Gish commented on the thread: “Talk to Gish, they practically invited space toilets”
Another Twitter user laid out their suggestion for a lunar loo. They explained: “it has an arm rest that you can control by the buttons on them and control comfort and posture on you’re back and legs with soft material for seating LEDlights(decidabal) and when u flush you have a installed toilet cleaner and the way you flush you tap the padding u flush”
Ridiculous NASA toilet designs
The good ideas had to come with a few bad; or, let’s say ridiculous.
