Arsenal could be in the market for a new striker this summer, amid fears over the futures of both Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.
Both Gunners strikers are out of contract in 2021, and if they don’t agree new deals soon, they may well be sold before they leave for nothing.
Mikel Arteta does have the promising Eddie Nketiah, but if both Aubameyang and Lacazette go, Arsenal must bring in another striker to bolster their attack.
Now, Bild report that Arsenal are in the race to sign Wolfsburg hitman Wout Weghorst. Newcastle United are interested too, with a €35million (£32million) asking price on his head.
Weghorst, 27, has been a goal machine since joining Wolfsburg from AZ Alkmaar in 2018. The Dutchman racked up 20 goals and five assists this term, as well as 18 goals and seven assists this term.
That’s 50 goals involvements in two seasons for Weghorst, who may now be ready to make a big move to the Premier League this summer.
Weghorst is big and strong at 6ft 6in tall, serving as the ideal target man with his incredible aerial ability and hold-up play – and Arsenal fans have made one main comparison.
Arsenal supporters have taken to Twitter in order to react to the rumours, suggesting that Weghorst is exactly like Olivier Giroud in terms of being a target man figure.
Whether that’s a good or bad thing is another matter; some think Arsenal lack that kind of presence, whilst others don’t want to see the Gunners going more direct under Arteta.
