Liza Koshy is next up on the list of YouTube stars apologising for their previous content.

In the wake of George Floyd’s death and the Black Lives Matter protests around the world, the public are now holding people, companies and brands to account for their use of racist stereotypes or their exclusionary practices.

Famous YouTuber turned TV presenter and actress Liza Koshy has been called out for a video she made in 2016 with her then-boyfriend David Dobrik.

So, what is the Liza Koshy YouTube video which caused such a stir that she issued an apology? What did Liza have to say?

What was Liza Koshy’s controversial video?

A video from 2016 resurfaced where Liza and David try ‘foreign’ candy together.

In this video, which has since been deleted, they pretend to speak Japanese. At one point David says: “It’s not racist, that’s like the sounds I hear when they talk,” while Liza adds: “No, it’s not racist as long as I keep saying ‘no’.”

Liza continues to respond in this way while David cracks some pretty offensive jokes.

A TikTok user captured the clip and captioned: “Why is no one talking about this? It’s a clear example of the normalized racism against Asians.”

David revived his offensive impersonation in another ‘foreign candy’ video from when the couple were in Hawaii. This video from 2016 – titled ‘COUPLE TRYING FOREIGN CANDY’ – is still uploaded to YouTube.

Liza Koshy’s apology

On Sunday, June 28th, Liza released a video to YouTube titled ‘I am sorry.’ This was to her audience of over 17.8 million subscribers.

Liza does not speak in the video, instead she shares an apology she has written.

In this apology, Liza writes:

“I now recognize and take responsibility for the times I was not the ally I am becoming today. Being anti-racist requires a personal reckoning… What I once thought of as ‘innocent jokes’ were actually tainted with implicit bias, and what might have been intended as ‘playful’ was actually to some, incredibly painful. And for that, I am so sorry.”

Liza also shared this statement on Instagram and Twitter. David Dobrik has yet to respond.

Fans react to Liza Koshy’s apology

When the offensive video of Liza Koshy and David Dobrik resurfaced, many fans had said they lost respect for the internet stars.

It looks like Liza’s apology isn’t enough as of yet to pull her out of the ‘cancelled’ zone.

One Twitter user stated: “Liza Koshy came up with this apology on ytb, I would prefer a video in which she goes in depth about Asian and black stereotypes she portraits in her videos with David Dobrik… to me it’s not enough.. pass.”
