Napoli coach Gennaro Gattuso has suggested that Hirving Lozano could be handed a fresh start after the reported Everton, West Ham and Newcastle United target was thrown out of training, speaking to Football Italia.
The £37 million Mexico international looked to have wasted his last chance at the Serie A giants earlier this month.
He was sent home by a clearly incensed Gattuso after failing to pull his weight during a training session and, as a result, was left out of the Coppa Italia final triumph over Juventus.
But, to Lozano’s credit, he has got his head down in a last-ditch attempt to save his previously ailing Napoli career.
After scoring just his third Serie A goal of the season off the bench against Hellas Verona, the former PSV talisman was rewarded with a bigger role in Sunday’s 3-1 victory over SPAL.
“Hirving Lozano is training well now and I am giving him a chance in return,” Gattuso explains.
“He has this incredible pace, we should put him in a position to give his best. He had chances to score today and I hope he’ll get them next time.”
Newcastle held talks with Lozano’s agent, Mino Raiola, in May according to AreaNapoli.
Il Mattino, meanwhile, claimed back in March that a reunion with former Napoli boss Carlo Ancelotti was on the cards at Everton, though a move to West Ham United cannot be discounted either with a £25 million bid on the table (AreaNapoli).
But if Lozano continues to perform on and off the pitch between now and the end of the season, who is to say he will not succeed in pulling off a dramatic and unexpected U-turn at the Stadio San Paolo?
