Rooney played with Gueye at Everton, and the Englishman has spoken highly of the 30-year-old defensive midfielder.
The 34-year-old has added that he told another of his former club, Manchester United, that the Senegal international was good enough for tham.
According to a report in The Express earlier this month, Wolves are interested in signing Gueye from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer transfer window.
The report has claimed that the Wanderers have identified the former Everton star as a potential replacement for Ruben Neves, who is on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.
Rooney wrote in The Times: “Everyone talks about Idrissa Gueye’s tackling and energy but what surprised me was his quality on the ball — he always looked to play it forward and to your feet.
“After a month playing with him I spoke to people at Manchester United saying he was good enough for them. I wasn’t shocked when Paris Saint-Germain signed him.”
Stats
Gueye joined PSG from Everton in the summer of 2019 for a transfer fee reported by The Express to be worth £30 million.
According to WhoScored, the defensive midfielder scored one goal and provided two assists in 20 Ligue 1 matches, and provided one assist in six Champions League games for PSG this season.
Good signing for Wolverhampton Wanderers?
Gueye is a very good defensive midfielder who was successful during his spell at Everton.
Wolves are an ambitious club, and given that the Senegalese is at the top of his game, he would make an instant impact at the Wanderers.
