Dominic Fike has opened up about making music during his time in jail. So, why did he go to prison?

Up until a few years ago, Dominic Fike wasn’t a well-known face in the music industry.

The 24-year-old rapper, who comes from Naples, Florida, rose to fame in 2015. Dominic reportedly signed up a contract with Columbia for $4 million and his single ‘3 Nights’ previously topped the charts in Australia and the UK.

In a recent interview, the rapper talked about his time in prison, as well as how he was inspired to make music while he was there.

Why did Dominic Fike go to jail?

Dominic was charged with a house arrest for battery of a police officer in 2016.

However, in 2017 the rapper was sent to jail for violating the house arrest.

Speaking to Complex, Dominic opened up about it, saying it was “just a wrong place, wrong time, charge with my brother. It’s public information now, it’s all right there.” 

The rapper spent 2 months on house arrest before going to prison.

He released his debut EP while he was still in jail and in the same interview with Complex, he added:

“I couldn’t check the views or respond to the homies. I couldn’t talk to people.”

Dominic on making music in jail

In a candid and raw interview on his YouTube channel named ‘IN-FOCUS, the rapper has opened up about making music in prison.

During his time in jail, Dominic explained that he had an interesting situation that sparked a new way to write music.

He said: “The sink would plays sounds. The sink had a tone, it had a note to it.”

The rapper revealed that he experimented with different sounds by banging on the sink, and it that way he found a new source to write music.

Dominic added that the single he wrote was not inspired by his experience in jail, however, he noted that it did help for the record’s success.
