The Chi returned for season 3 on Sunday, June 21st to bring the surprising news that one character is no longer on the series.
The episode brought the emotional scene of Brandon’s funeral which has left many fans confused over what exactly happened to him.
Here’s Brandon actor Jason Mitchell’s exit from the series explained.
Who plays Brandon on The Chi?
Jason Mitchell plays an aspiring chef Brandon.
In the series, Brandon wants to open a restaurant with his girlfriend Jerrika.
Before his role as Brandon, Jason played Eazy-E in Straight Outta Compton and received the African American Film Critics Association Award for best supporting actor.
Jason Mitchell’s exit explained
The actor has left the series following harassment claims, The Hollywood Reporter wrote last year.
In the article, showrunner Ayanna Floyd Davis explained:
“As a showrunner, I did everything I could to deal with his behavior, by speaking with the studio’s HR department multiple times and instructing one actress to call HR herself, before I became a target of his rage and inappropriateness, and had to report him to HR, as well.”
The report adds that creator Lena Waithe was not aware of the allegations before they wrapped up filming the first season.
Brandon’s last scene on The Chi
While it’s clear why the actor was written out of the series, it remains unknown what exactly happened to Brandon.
The Chi season 3 premiere saw Brandon’s last appearance, even though it didn’t physically show actor Jason Mitchell.
The beginning of the episode contained mixed emotions. From one side, viewers had the pleasure to watch Kevin and Keisha’s mother’s wedding.
But then the episode had a major change when it switched to Brandon’s funeral. The episode, however, didn’t offer any explanation of what exactly happened to the character.
