Fans of The Promised Neverland will be disappointed to hear that the second season has been delayed until 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
I feel that I’m starting to sound like a broken record with coronavirus-anime production delay news.
However, fans of the genre will most likely have to get used to sitting in limbo and news of delays for at least another few months.
Unfortunately, there has been another anime casualty in the COVID-19 pandemic, with the announcement that The Promised Neverland season 2 has been delayed until 2021.
The Promised Neverland season 2: Renewal status
Fans of The Promised Neverland will be happy to hear that the show will return for a second season.
Considering how popular the series has become, along with the storyline for season 1 setting up a second instalment, many fans may not have been surprised by this. However, it’s always nice to have an official announcement.
“I definitely want everyone to feel the same intense experience as the first season.” – Kenta Suzuki, Producer.
Interestingly, viewers are already expecting season 2 to bring the same ‘intense experience’ considering the change of atmosphere in the season 1 finale – going from a thriller to more of a horror-style.
The Promised Neverland season 2: Release date
This has been met with disappointment from fans, but understandable considering the complications that the pandemic is causing. Unfortunately, The Promised Neverland now joins a long list of anime series and movies that have been delayed.
Thankfully, a live-action film is being planned for a December 2020 release, so not too long before we get more canon on-screen material once again.
In June 2020, it was also announced that Amazon Studios was developing an English live-action series based on the original manga. The fanbase was initially apprehensive by this news, but this turned to excitement when it was revealed that Rodney Rothman would be at the helm – Grudge Match (2013), 22 Jump Street (2014) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).
The Promised Neverland season 2: Plot
As the anime has been a loyal adaptation of the original manga series, we do know where the plot will most likely go for season 2.
Season 1 covered up to Chapter 37 of Volume 5 and there have been reports that the next instalment will cover around 64 chapters (combined over 24 episodes).
However, never wanting to reveal any potential spoilers, we won’t go into the plot from the manga.
Overall, we are expecting the plot to be a direct continuation from season 1. Although it is highly likely that there will be some small deviations from the original material – especially with the added few months the writers now have.
Season 1 of The Promised Neverland is available right now on Crunchyroll, Funimation, Anime-Planet and Hulu.
