Anime fans were treated to a blast from the past with Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma releasing on Netflix, but the platform decided only to release the first season, why?
Netflix is really doing some great stuff for anime fans both past and present recently.
This month, we got Baki (season 3), Dorohedoro (season 1) Pokémon Journeys: The Series (season 1) and even March Comes in Like a Lion (season 1). Next month, we have BNA (season 1), Seven Deadly Sins (season 4) and Japan Sinks 2020.
So when Netflix released Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma, fans absolutely went bonkers, but many were left feeling hungry for more when the platform decided to only release the first season.
How many seasons of Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma is there?
- At the time of writing, the anime has four completed seasons, with the fifth and final season currently ongoing.
The first season of Food Wars premiered way back in 2015 with 24 episodes, with following seasons featuring 13 episodes (2016), 24 episodes (2017) and 12 episodes (2019) respectively.
Season 5 consists of 13 episodes and was released in April 2020, but the series was severely impacted by the coronavirus pandemic – only airing two episodes before being delayed.
Recently, it was announced that the fifth and final season of Food Wars would return for episode three on July 17; however, the release schedule after that remains unknown.
When will Netflix release the second season of Food Wars?
- At the time of writing, Netflix has not officially announced that they will be releasing the second season of the anime – let alone when it would premiere.
This has frustrated many fans who argue that after buying the broadcasting rights, Netflix should release all of the seasons that are available, in this case, the first four seasons.
However, the platform may be waiting a few weeks in order to gauge the viewing audience and online feedback before making a decision about releasing more Food Wars content.
Although there is also the possibility that they are delaying the release of season 2 until there is a notable dry-period in new anime. For example, we already have BNA, Japan Sinks 2020 and Seven Deadly Sins coming this month, so there is a chance that Netflix is waiting until they don’t have an original show to focus on.
Season 1 of Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma is available right now on Netflix.
