Le Phoceen has quoted an entourage of Gueye claiming that Arsenal made contact and offered to pay three times his salary at Le Harve.
However, the entourage is quoted as saying that the 21-year-old defensive midfielder, who is out of contract at Le Havre this summer, wants to play in Ligue 1 for the foreseeable future, adding that Marseille are a club who would suit the 6ft 2in Frenchman.
According to a report in ESPN this week, although Gueye signed a pre-contract agreement with Watford earlier this season, he does not want to move to the Hornets this summer.
Le Phoceen quotes Gueye’s entourage as saying: “Marseille are one of the clubs most interested in Pope, It’s clear. There are also Metz, Strasbourg, Angers, Nantes, German, Portuguese and Spanish clubs.
“Arsenal also contacted us with a salary three times higher. But Pape wants to play in Ligue 1 for two or three years before going abroad, and Marseille are clearly in the shortlist. It would be a great club for him.”
According to WhoScored, Gueye made 24 starts and one substitute appearance in Ligue 2 for Le Havre this season.
It is a huge jump from the second division in France to the Premier League, and Gueye would have had taken quite some time to adapt to the top flight of English football.
It would make sense for the youngster to stay in France and developed further before moving to a big club in England.
