Liverpool’s hopes of bringing Gustavo Maia to Anfield look to be over with Barcelona director Xavier Vilajoana telling Sport that the La Liga champions will wrap up a deal for the Sao Paulo wonderkid this summer.

In truth, the Reds always had a mountain to climb as they looked to snatch a highly-rated Brazilian from under the noses of the Catalan Kings.

Barcelona already had an agreement in place to bring Maia to the Camp Nou.

And though the deal appeared to be in doubt recently with Liverpool throwing their own hat into the ring, according to Marca, it seems only a matter of time now before the teenager is posing in red and blue.

“We will fulfill the agreement we had. He’s really skillful and could give us a big boost,” Vilajoana says of a player who will set Barcelona back £3 million.

This comes a matter of days after Maia’s agent suggested that Liverpool were never the likely destination for a player who had his heart set on following in the footsteps of Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and Neymar.

“We are sure Barcelona will complete the purchase,” Danilo Silva says in quotes reported by Globo Esporte.

“There was already a signal from the club and Maia has started private Spanish lessons to get more prepared.

“Other clubs came to us in the last few months. But he never had any doubt, he always wanted Barcelona.”

Liverpool will not be losing much sleep, however. Jurgen Klopp, Michael Edwards and co have their fingers in a lot of pies at present and Maia is just one of many highly-rated youngsters who have been linked with a move to the soon-to-be Premier League champions.

Liverpool could still snap up an even more promising young Brazilian in the shape of Vasco da Gama forward Talles Magno.
