George Floyd T-shirt: Amazon controversy

Many were sickened to see a T-shirt featuring the infamous image of a policeman kneeling on the neck of George Floyd available to buy on US Amazon.

As highlighted by the BBC, it cost $14.99 (£11.70) and was being sold by a third-party reseller, rather than Amazon themselves. An employee over at Amazon flagged it to the BBC.

The source also points out Amazon’s guidelines, which strictly prohibits the sale of items with depict crime scene images. This certainly falls under that category.

Looking through the reseller’s other products for sale, there was a number aimed at those in support of Black Lives Matter. However, selling clothing depicting George Floyd’s death can be deemed irresponsible for a number of reasons and it’s easy to see how anti-BLM individuals could wear the shirt to show support of racism.

George Floyd T-shirt: Amazon offer a statement

Amazon informed the BBC in a recent statement that the account selling the item was being “investigated”.

They also addressed:

“All sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who do not will be subject to action including potential removal of their account… the product in question is no longer available.”

While that specific product by the seller is now unavailable, some have identified a range of similar items on the site. However, they are listed as out of stock.

Nevertheless, this still serves as evidence that they were once available for purchase.
