According to Foot Mercato, former Arsenal player Ismael Bennacer is in talks with Spanish giants Real Madrid over a potential £45 million move.

Bennacer joined Arsenal as a youngster under then manager Arsene Wenger.

He made just one appearance for the Gunners, coming in that disappointing 3-0 thrashing of Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in the cup back in 2015.

Bennacer was ultimately sold to Empoli in 2017, with Arsenal pocketing £900,000.

Now looking back with hindsight, Arsenal will surely have grave regrets.

The holding midfielder was played out of position at the Emirates Stadium. He has found his place in Italy, starring for AC Milan this season.

According to Foot Mercato, his form has attracted Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain.

And the French editorial go on to say that La Liga giants Real Madrid are the latest to show an interest, contacting the player’s advisor over a potential move.

Bennacer has a contract with Milan until 2024. His release clause stands at £45 million.

Ironically, as the Algeria international stars in midfield, it’s one area where Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta will surely look to strengthen this summer.

The Gunners will lose Dani Ceballos when he returns to Madrid after his loan spell. Granit Xhaka, meanwhile, remains an unconvincing figure at the Premier League club.

Bennacer, 22, has his whole career ahead of him. Arsenal will look at the player as a missed opportunity while speculation grows ahead of the summer.
