Tottenham Hotspur have been offered the chance to sign Matias Vecino from Inter Milan this summer with North London rivals Arsenal likely to stay away from the £18 million midfielder, according to the Daily Star.
Spurs fans know all about this tigerish South American.
A technically-gifted and tenacious footballer who typifies the blood-thirsty ‘garra’ spirit of Uruguayan football, it was Vecino who stabbed home a 91st minute winner as Inter stunned Tottenham in the Champions League group-stages last season.
And, two years on, reports suggest that the 28-year-old could be playing for the London giants rather than against them.
Inter Milan are looking to sell a man they bought from Fiorentina in 2017, with an £18 million price-tag on Vecino’s head. The Daily Star claims that his agents have approached Tottenham to enquire about whether Jose Mourinho may be interested – and it seems they might be in luck.
A box-to-box ‘number eight’ by trade, Vecino will not be the ball-winning, Claude Makelele type that Spurs are crying out for.
But he could add some much-needed graft and guile in the engine room, boasting natural ability that Moussa Sissoko and Eric Dier simply cannot match.
The Star points out that Everton and Arsenal have shown an interest but, as it stands, the Toffees and The Gunners are prioritising alternative options. Vecino, it seems, is well down their pecking order.
