Groningen have confirmed that exciting full-back Deyovaisio Zeefuik has interest on the table from the Premier League with Southampton keen to sign the Dutchman this summer, as reported by Voetbal International.
Even if the Saints are planning to keep their power dry during a summer in which big-money transfers will be few and far between, they will have no choice but to enter the market for a right-sided defender.
Portugal international Cedric Soares is set to become a free agent at the end of the season. Kyle Walker-Peters, meanwhile, will return to parent club Tottenham with no ‘option to buy’ clause in his contract.
And that is where Zeefuik comes in.
VI claims that the South Coast club are keen on a rapid right-back who has shone at Groningen after failing to make the grade at Ajax.
“There has been a lot of interest in Deyo for a long time and that is also starting to become more concrete,” technical director Mark-Jan Fledderus admits.
“That interest comes mainly from France, England and Germany.”
As VI adds, a move to the Premier League wouldn’t exactly be ‘financially unattractive’ to Zeefuik. A move to Southampton would see the former Holland U19 international receive a substantial pay rise after all.
And speaking to AD recently, Zeefuik admitted that he has probably played his last game for Groningen, saying that ‘it is time’ to leave the Euroborg.
He has just one year left on his contract and Southampton will be hoping that a cut-price deal can be agreed.
