After the dramatic ending to season 5 of The Originals, fans are left wondering why she hit show was cancelled when there was so much left to explore.
The Originals is the hugely popular spin-off show from the mega-series that was The Vampire Diaries.
The show followed Klaus Mikaelson; a vampire-wolf hybrid who becomes involved with the supernatural politics of the French Quarter in New Orleans.
The Originals was adored for its slick production and memorable characters, but the show was never to return for season 6.
Why was the show cancelled and could we see a return in the form of a spin-off show just as the Originals was to Vampire Diaries?
The Originals: How did season 5 conclude?
The Originals was an emotional rollercoaster from the very first episode until the last.
The story had a got a little predictable after season 3, but none of us really expected that ending with Klaus and Elijah ending each other’s lives with the last white oak stakes.
“For years we knew that one of them would go at the end, because when you’re telling a story about immortal beings finding resolution, resolution can beautifully come in being able to cease being immortal.” – The Originals creator, Julie Plec.
However, there were some really touching endings for our characters. Freya and Keelin are preparing to start a beautiful little family together, whilst Marcel and Rebekah found happiness with the promise of a normal human life.
The Originals season 6: Why was the show cancelled?
After the show entered its fourth season, the ratings began to slip away and the storyline was criticised by viewers for being too predictable.
The news that the show would not be returning after season 5 was announced on July 20, 2017.
Plec made the announcement herself on Twitter just before she headed out to Comic-Con that year.
“It’s both a gift and a burden to be able to control the ending of a series. Many shows are not lucky enough to have a hand in deciding when the end has come…Ending a show is always bittersweet, but for me, it’s a true blessing to be a part of making that choice.” – Julie Plec.
However, Plec ended her message by saying: “In a show about an immortal family who believes in ‘Always and Forever,’ it’s never really the end of the story…”
Possibly we are reading too much into this last goodbye, but many fans have continued to believe that the show could return one day.
The Originals: Spin-off shows
Fans have also clung to hope that the storyline or the show’s characters could return for spin-off canon material.
In 2014, we had ‘The Originals: The Awakening’, a web series that followed Kol Mikaelson. Then, we had ‘Legacies’ in 2018 which centred around Hope Mikaelson.
Future spin-off shows have never been ruled out by either Plec or any of the main cast. However, at the time of writing, nothing has been confirmed and it is looking increasingly likely that we will never see a return to the world of Vampire Diaries.
All 5 seasons of The Originals is available to stream right now on Netflix, Amazon Prime and Google Play.
