Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol spoke to ESPN FC about Jordan Henderson’s impact at Anfield.
The Reds skipper has had a fantastic season under Jurgen Klopp and is one of the candidates to win the Player of the Season award.
Henderson’s leadership played a huge part in Liverpool winning the Champions League last year, and the same has continued as they close in on the Premier League crown this term.
Nicol heaped praise on the Englishman and claimed that he has had a bigger impact at Liverpool than Xabi Alonso.
He said: “Well you have to say that Henderson’s been more effective because Liverpool have won the Champions League and he’s pushed them, he’s one of the main reasons why they’re going to win the Premier League.
“As great a footballer as Alonso was, I think the influence that Henderson has had on this team has been bigger than Alonso had. I think no doubt Henderson’s made a bigger impact in this Liverpool side than Alonso did for the team he played for.”
Alonso is undoubtedly one of the best midfielders to have ever played for Liverpool. The Spaniard helped the Reds win the Champions League and the FA Cup before leaving for Real Madrid all those years ago.
In terms of playing ability, Henderson’s name is never really mentioned in the same breath as Alonso. But winning the Premier League title surely surpasses what the Spaniard achieved at the club.
However, Alonso’s vision and quality on the ball made Reds fans fall in love with him, which is why he will be remembered as a Liverpool great for years to come.
