According to Calciomercato, Everton have backed away from Inter Milan midfielder Matias Vecino after strong links earlier this year.

It’s claimed that Everton’s interest is ‘less intense’ than it was a few months ago. Valencia are thought to be keen, and Inter are willing to sell.

They want up to €25million (£22.5million), and will accept no less than €20million (£18million). It remains to be seen whether anybody steps forward with that fee.

Everton are likely to be in the market for a new midfielder this summer, but the global pandemic may have impacted their stance on Vecino.

Spending that kind of money on the 28-year-old may not be possible right now, with Everton – just like many other clubs – having to adjust their spending plans.

Cheaper alternatives may have to be pursued, and Everton fans may not be surprised to hear that the Toffees are backing away from such a deal for a player who turns 29 in just a few months.

Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti spoke to Corriere Della Sera in February, and suggested that Vecino wasn’t a prime target for the Toffees.

Those quotes combined with this new report make it unlikely that Vecino will join the Toffees, but there is of course time for that situation to change.
