If you are trying out Phantasy Star Online 2 for the first time, here is a helpful guide to each class available to you in-game!

PSO2 is a free-to-play RPG game that is the latest addition to the Phantasy Star series published by Sega.

When you jump into PS02, you need to pick a class. In this game, classes determine a character’s level, skill and stats, but it is not a finite decision.

You can change which class you have equipped at any point in the game via the Class Counter in the ARKS Lobby. If you don’t level up your character, you will level up the class your character is using, so don’t stress too much about this.

What is important is that you find a class that suits your particular playstyle. If you are new to PSO2, maybe try out the Hunter, Ranger, Force or Summoner class.

Here is a beginner’s guide to each of the nine basic and 3 successor classes in PSO2.

PS02: Basic Classes

Basic Classes are the standard classes available to all characters when they start the game, each with unique traits and abilities.

Hunter: The Hunter is the standard striking class with high survivability that is best suited for solo play. They have access to three weapon types: Swords, Wired Lances and Partizans. The Hunters available Skill Tree has excellent depth for both offensive and defensive play.

Ranger: The Ranger is the standard ranged class that can be extremely effective with large party groups. They have access to three weapon types: Assault Rifles, Launchers and Gunslash. Upgrading the Rangers Skill Tree will grant various support options and damage boosts.

Force: The Force is the standard tech class that is a good all-rounder with support and heavy firepower options. They have access to three weapon types: Rod, Talis and Gunslash. Upgrading the Skill Tree will grant you use of different Techniques but lacks defensive support.

Fighter: The Fighter is the specialised striking class that is a dedicated front-line attacker. They have access to four weapon types: Twin Daggers, Double Saber, Knuckles and Gunslash. Upgrading their Skill Tree will have excellent additions for damage boosts.

Gunner: The Gunner is the specialised ranged class that is also a good front-line attacker but with burst-damage capabilities. They have access to three weapon types: Twin Machine Guns, Assault Rifle and Gunslash. Upgrading their Skill Tree will reward players with better close quarter combat and manoeuvrability capabilities.

Techer: The Techer class is the specialised tech class that is a powerful supporter and survivor. They have access to three weapon types: Wand, Talis and Gunslash. Upgrading their skill tree will allow them to become extremely viable support options for parties.

Braver: The Braver is the striking-ranged hybrid class that is a fast, yet powerful mid-range attacker. They have access to three weapon types: Katanas, Bullet Bows and Gunslash. Upgrading their Skill Tree will advance their skill, timing and precision.

Bouncer: The Bouncer is the striking-tech hybrid class focused on passive support to teammates. They have access to two weapon types: Dual Blades and Jet Boots. Upgrading their Skill Tree will advance their instantaneous support and damage output.

Summoner: The Summoner is a slightly different type of class that uses Pets as a means of offence and defence. They have access to two weapon types: Takt and Gunslash. However, they also have access to a variety of Pets: Wanda/Jinga, Torim/Aero, Cery/Popple, Maron, Melon, Viola, Synchro, Redran and Rappy.

PS02: Successor classes

When players have upgraded two different basic classes to level 75, they gain access to successor classes.

Hero: The Hero is the premier offence-focused Successor Class. They have access to: Wielding Swords, Twin Machine Guns, Talises and are to switch seamlessly between weapons to handle any situation.

Phantom: The Phantom is the premier all-rounder Successor Class. They have access to: Wielding Assault Rifles, Katanas, Rods and can support their allies by reducing the attack power of enemies with Status Debuffs.

Etoile: The Etoile is the premier range Successor Class. They have access to: Wielding Double Sabers, Dual Blades, Wands and specializes in mobility.
