Matthew Smith has been called into first-team training at Arsenal by Mikel Arteta, according to Football London.
Smith has never featured for Arsenal’s senior squad yet, but there are very high hopes for the teenager around the Emirates Stadium.
With Arsenal back in training now, Arteta was keen to take a look at the youngster.
Arsenal’s squad is set to be tested when the Premier League comes back, as there will be a great number of fixtures played in a short space of time, and Arteta appears to be assessing Smith’s first-team credentials.
The 19-year-old has looked strong for Arsenal’s development side all season and has made 12 PL2 appearances.
Smith can play just in front of defence, and would be in competition with the likes of Granit Xhaka and Matteo Guendeouzi for a place in Arsenal’s starting line-up.
Arteta has already shown a willingness to test out Arsenal’s youngsters, so if Smith does impress in training, he may well be given a chance before the end of the campaign.
