Guillem Balague has rubbished a report that Newcastle United have already spoken to Mauricio Pochettino about becoming their new manager.
According to Sky Sports News, Pochettino will be the Magpies’ new owners number one choice to replace Steve Bruce at St James’s Park if the £300 million takeover goes through.
Tottenham legend Ossie Ardiles is reported by The Mirror to have claimed that the former Spurs manager has been offered the job by Newcastle’s would-be new owners.
But after speaking to Ardiles himself, renowned Spanish journalist Balague has revealed that he told him that he has ‘no idea’ about whether the North-East club have contacted the Argentine coach.
He said on his YouTube channel: “I spoke to Ossie and he said nothing of the sort. What he said was ‘talk to Pochettino. Don’t ask me about this’ and secondly I imagine he’ll speak to whoever is interested. Thirdly, Ossie said ‘I’ve no idea if Newcastle have spoken to him’.”
So it isn’t quite as cut and dry as Pochettino being in talks with Newcastle, which is how it was reported a few days ago.
Still, it doesn’t mean that United aren’t interested in hiring him as Bruce’s replacement and if and when a takeover goes through, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he was indeed a genuine target.
This is a world-renowned coach who brought Spurs to a Champions League final last season, elevating the club to a whole new level overall.
And if he was steering the ship at Newcastle, it’d make the club far more attractive for potential targets.
