The Dr Dolittle riddle may seem like a tricky maths question on the surface but finding the sneaky brain teaser’s answer is easier than you might think.

The year 2020 hasn’t exactly started in the way we all would’ve thought.

Thanks to the COVID-19 outbreak, we’ve all been spending much more time at home than we’re used to and as a result, many of us have been left searching for ways to keep ourselves entertained.

While Netflix and Disney+ have proven to be popular methods for some, others have taken to more engaging methods by taking part in a series of riddles and brain teasers that have made their way online in recent weeks and months.

One of the most recent riddles to emerge on social media has been the Dr Dolittle riddle but what exactly is the question and more importantly, what’s the answer?

Riddle: You walk into Dr Dolittle’s room

The Dr Dolittle riddle is as follows:

  • You walk into Dr Dolittle’s room and see a bed.
On the bed, there are two dogs, four cats, a giraffe, five cows and a duck. There are also three chickens flying above the bed.
How many legs are on the floor?

That’s a lot of legs to think about but the answer is much simpler than you’d first think.

Answer: How many legs are on the floor?

So just how many legs are on the floor of this zoological bedroom?

  • There are a total of six legs on the floor.

‘But how?’ we hear you ask.

Well, that all stems from the fact that almost all of the animals in this room are all on the gigantic bed and the ones that aren’t on the bed itself are flying in the air above it.

As a result, only your two legs and the four legs (or feet – yes, we’re counting feet as part of a leg) of the bed are touching the floor in this animal-filled room, hence the answer of six.
