This has been a monumental week for ‘cancel culture’.
Ever since Lana Del Rey got ‘cancelled’ on Thursday, May 21st following a controversial Instagram post, there have been a string of celebrities that have also had the same treatment.
Sure, we are all human and make mistakes, but some of the things which have come out about these celebs – Doja Cat’s potentially racist song lyrics, to name just one instance – are a real cause for concern.
So, why has Jimmy Fallon been ‘cancelled’? What led to #JimmyFallonIsOverParty trending on Twitter?
Why is Jimmy Fallon ‘cancelled’?
As with Doja Cat, some of chat show host Jimmy Fallon’s history has caught up with him.
An unearthed Saturday Night Live clip of Jimmy Fallon performing a skit in blackface has triggered outrage on the internet. The skit was from way back in 2000 and sees Jimmy impersonating the American actor Chris Rock.
The skit is out there on Twitter, and having watched it, this writer would say it’s wholly offensive.
#JimmyFallonIsOverParty trends on Twitter
We’ve seen the ‘Is Over Party’ hashtags all over Twitter this past week, as celebrities are being ‘cancelled’ left, right and centre.
The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon joined the line-up of ‘cancelled’ celebs on Tuesday, May 26th.
Twitter was split between those who were majorly critical of Jimmy Fallon’s use of blackface in the SNL skit, and those who were done with ‘cancel culture’.
One Twitter user said: “first lana, then doja, and now JIMMY FALLON?? chile let me BREATHE”
Another commented: “so lana del rey, doja cat, hillary duff, and now jimmy fallon. quarantine rlly has twitter coming for any and everyone”
What has Jimmy Fallon said?
As of yet, there has been no response from Jimmy Fallon.
It can be assumed that he will address the issue in the following days, as we’ve seen with both Lana Del Rey and Doja Cat.
Until then, all we’ve got is the public’s response to him, which isn’t looking good right now.
In other news, it’s time to graduate on Instagram!
