Hawaii Five-0 has finally come to an end, but fans of the action series are confused as to why the show has been cancelled since it’s still pulling in the viewers.
When thinking about American police action shows, there are a few notable series that standout, one of which is Hawaii Five-0.
The ‘police procedural’ television series may have been a reboot of the original 1968 show, but developed its own massive following.
However, after nearly 10 years on our screens, Hawaii Five-0 is finally coming to an end.
This was an abrupt ending to the series and fans are confused as to why the show was cancelled – especially considering the massive fanbase it still had.
Why is Hawaii Five-0 cancelled?
Hawaii Five-0 never saw the huge drop in viewing figures that is typical of most cancelled shows– although there was a slight drop in recent years, episodes still averaged over 7 million viewers.
So, why was it cancelled? The simple answer, actor contracts.
According to Deadline, both Alex O’Loughlin’s (Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett) and Scott Caan’s (Detective Sergeant Danno Williams) contracts expire at the end of season 10.
Whilst the show’s producers would be keen to continue the show, fans highly doubt that O’Loughlin would be willing to renew his Hawaii Five-0 contract.
O’Loughlin’s Hawaii-Five-0 injuries
In 2016, O’Loughlin revealed to Collider that he has been suffering from back issues for a number of years.
“I’ve been hurt really badly on this show. I’ve now got some serious back issues, which I’m going back and forth to California to deal with… I’m getting stem cell treatments in my spine so that I can pick my kids up.” – Alex O’Loughlin.
However, it seems that the actor’s injury list goes way beyond back problems. Talking to TV Line in 2018, he said: ” I’ve blown both shoulders, one knee. I’ve had my elbow tendon reattached. I’ve got bulging discs in my neck and my back.”
O’Loughlin then admitted that the origin for these physical stresses was the stunts that he performed in the first few years of the show.
“The physical exhaustion of working with injury and working huge hours day after day, year after year…the whole show has been extremely physically daunting” said O’Loughlin.
Will we ever see a return of Hawaii Five-0?
There is a chance that we could see Hawaii Five-0 return in a few years, but it is more likely that there will be spin-off shows rather than a full reboot.
There are plenty of characters that could hold their own in a spin-off series.
However, as the show lies within the Lenkov-verse which includes MacGyver and Magnum P.I., keep an eye out for cameos in the future.
The final word on Hawaii Five-0 comes from O’Loughlin himself: “To the fans, I don’t know how to thank you guys. Thank you for following us the way you have. I’m going to miss you. Aloha.”
