The new series has proven a quick binge for Netflix audiences but what year is White Lines set in? Let’s dive into it.
With more time on our hands, Netflix has proven to be a tremendous help in these trying times.
It’s fair to say that the streaming service has offered us compelling new shows at just the right time throughout the lockdown. They kicked things off perfectly with the thoroughly addictive Tiger King and have since given us the likes of Outer Banks, showing us an adventurous vision of summer to help us escape from monotonous routine.
With festivals and so forth being cancelled, summer is looking particularly bleak. Fortunately, Netflix has given us another portrait of a one-of-a-kind summer to sink our teeth into with White Lines.
Created by Álex Pina, who previously brought us Money Heist, this 10-episode series stars Laura Haddock as Zoe Walker, who heads out to Ibiza when the body of her brother Axel is found.
It’s thrilling stuff, but when does it all take place?
What year is White Lines set in?
It’s never explicitly confirmed, but the story does give us an indication as to when the events take place.
Axel’s journey to the top as an aspiring DJ in Ibiza takes place in the nineties. The scene, the fashion and the language all help paint a compelling and exciting portrait of the popular destination’s heyday.
However, the series begins with the discovery of Axel’s body, which is said to have been found twenty years after his disappearance. So, taking this into consideration, it’s likely that White Lines is predominantly set in the second half of the 2010s.
If it were strictly set in present-day, it would mean that Axel would have arrived to take Ibiza by storm right at the end of the nineties, which doesn’t appear to be the case.
However, it’s clear to see that the creators weren’t concerned about specific years, but rather, helping sculpt an atmosphere of a time and place. The flashbacks are arguably engineered to create a nostalgic snapshot of the nineties in general, rather than being hindered by specific years and benchmarks.
White Lines filming locations
According to BT, White Lines was primarily filmed in Ibiza, which we’re sure you expected.
However, the crew also travelled to the Spanish mainland and neighbouring islands, with Majorca – known for its beach resorts and astonishing coves etc. – also proving an important filming location.
They also shot in Madrid and the Mediterranean city of Almeria.
Audiences talk White Lines
Since the series was released on Netflix, a number of audiences have flocked to Twitter to offer their thoughts and opinions.
On the whole, it’s gone down a treat.
