The Martian returns to our screens on May 20th for a screening on Film 4. The Oscar-nominated film is a real treat but where was The Martian filmed?

Filming locations can be a make or break aspect of a film for many viewers.

For those who are sticklers for authenticity, a studio lot or greenscreen can be a huge detriment to a film.

So what can a film like 2015’s The Martian do to win over those who are keen for genuine filming locations?

Obviously, The Martian cannot have been filmed on the surface of Mars itself but what locations were used in the making of the Oscar-nominated film instead?

The Martian on Film 4 and Netflix

The Martian first hit cinemas in the UK on September 30th, 2020 and has since become a hugely popular film and currently occupies a place on Netflix.

The Martian tells the story of Mark Watney (Matt Damon) after he is left stranded on Mars and must ‘science the s***’ out of the red planet in order to survive until help can arrive.

On May 20th, 2020, the film returns to Freeview TV as it airs on Film 4 at 9pm.

Where was The Martian filmed?

  • The Martian was filmed in Hungary and the Wadi Rum desert in Jordan.

The Martian’s interior scenes were filmed at Korda Studios located just outside of Budapest in Hungary.

The location boasts one of the biggest sound stages anywhere in the world.

For outdoor scenes, filming took place over just eight days in the desert of Wadi Rum in Jordan which is a UNESCO world heritage site.

For their cooperation in making the film, the country of Jordan was awarded a Mars rover model built specifically for the film, which can now be found in Jordan’s Royal Automobile Museum.
