Chelsea are under no illusions that they face an uphill battle if they want to sign Timo Werner with Liverpool so far ahead in the chase for the RB Leipzig talisman, according to 90Min.

As you might expect, Liverpool are far from the only Premier League team batting their eyelashes in the direction of one of Europe’s most prolific forwards.

But it feels for all the world that, if Werner is going to up sticks and leave the Bundesliga this summer, there is only one club likely to unveil him on British shores.

The Germany international has made no secret of his admiration for the six-time European champions and, if Liverpool do decide to trigger his £52 million release-clause, Werner is confident that he has the talent to challenge Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Bobby Firmino for a place in Klopp’s starting XI (Independent).

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea, then, appear to be fighting a losing battle.

Olivier Giroud is not getting any younger while Michy Batshuayi, remarkably enough, has made less than ten Premier League starts in Chelsea colours in four years. So it would be more of a surprise if the Blues were not interested in bringing Werner to Stamford Bridge.

But, while Chelsea have not given up just yet, 90Min points out that there is an awareness in West London that, if Werner is going to sign for anyone before 2020/21 kicks off, it is more than likely to be Liverpool.
