I know this Much is True: Three Rivers

The miniseries is set in the town of Three Rivers in Connecticut.

However, the town is actually fictional.

As highlighted by The Cinemaholic, the author of the source material – Wally Lamb –  said that it’s essentially intended as “…an amalgamation of Norwich, Willimantic and New London.”

When plans to adapt it for the screen commenced, he expressed his wishes for the project to be filmed in eastern Connecticut. This way, the locations would reflect those described in the 1998 book.

In hopes of convincing them, he requested both Derek Cianfrance and Mark Ruffalo to head out to his Mansfield home, giving them a tour of the locations which worked their way into his text.

While this didn’t exactly go to plan, they were able to grasp what Wally wanted and began to find locations which would evoke a similar sense of place.

So, where did they shoot instead?

Derek Cianfrance talks I Know This Much is True

In an interview with Decider – over Zoom, under the current circumstances – Derek Cianfrance opened up about what attracted him to the story:

“…maybe it was my Catholic upbringing: the idea of suffering, penance, you know to get through to a catharsis, to epiphanies in life… that’s what I’ve always been drawn to. I can’t help it, but my imagination is a tragic one. My imagination would always take me in those directions and I think it’s because I love and worry for people in my life so much.”

He also adds: “… my life has always been very ordinary and the stories that always happen to me have always been very ordinary and never worthy of a movie. Yet when I’m experiencing those things they feel huge… overwhelming. So I’ve always tried to tell stories about… the most personal, vulnerable moments that I can find, you know?”

We hope you’re enjoying the series.
