The Italian media outlet claimed that AS Roma were in talks with Arsenal to sign Mkhitaryan on a permanent basis. But they also quoted what was believed to be the Armenian’s message to his parent club.
Mkhitaryan was quoted to have said: “My time in London is over, I hope you manage to find an agreement with Roma because my desire is to remain.”
It was a surprise to see a player as soft-spoken as Mkhitaryan come out and publicly let his wishes be known to the media, especially during a time like this.
That message would have hurt Arsenal in transfer negotiations but the Gunners have nothing to worry about now as Mkhitaryan’s agent, Mino Raiola, has come out and rubbished the report.
Raiola’s statement should soften any blow there potentially could have been in transfer negotiations between Arsenal and Roma.
The deal is still very likely to go through, even if Mkhitaryan’s reported quotes were true.
The Armenian clearly has no future at the Emirates and in today’s difficult financial conditions, Arsenal would love nothing more than to let go of a player who is in enormous wages.
Mkhitaryan leaving is almost guaranteed this summer and both him, and his agent, are right to come out and clear the air over his recently reported comments.
