Gangs of London is a roaring success, but audiences are wondering who plays Lale after the character makes a significant impression.

What’s the best thing you’ve watched this year?

Many of us have had more time to check out TV shows and films recently, so you could say there’s some strong competition.

Netflix has delivered us such great efforts as the insane documentary series Tiger King and the Safdie brothers’ Uncut Gems, but we imagine lots of you will argue that Gangs of London smashes all competition out of the water.

Co-created by Gareth Evans of The Raid Fame, we witness the Welsh filmmaker returning to explore gangland hierarchies and unflinching violence, this time over in the capital.

It boasts an amazing cast featuring the likes of Joe Cole (Peaky Blinders), but let’s spotlight one of the supporting players…

Gangs of London: Who plays Lale?

  • In Gangs of London, the character of Lale is played by Narges Rashidi.

The 40-year-old Iranian-German actress delivers an exceptional performance in the Sky series.

In an interview with Ajoure, she opened up about having a tougher time navigating the realm of entertainment to start with:

“…When I started there were hardly any roles for people who looked like me. In any case, roles that did not serve clichés and stigmas. That has improved over the years, but it is far from being where it could and should be. The United States and England are one, or maybe three, steps ahead of us in this regard. Diversity is now a priority in almost all projects. I am convinced that viewers in Germany have long been open and ready for it. They have proven this often enough. The ‘makers’ simply have to dare more.”

She also added: “…it has always been a secret dream of mine to work for HBO, but also for Sky. I am very thankful for that.”

It’s a terrific achievement being in such a brilliant series, but where have we seen her before?

Narges Rashidi: Previous roles

According to IMDb, Narges first appeared on screens back in a 2004 film called Venussian Tabutasco.

A year later, she briefly starred in Æon Flux (credited as Pregnant Woman) before landing the part of Leo’s Girlfriend in the rather underrated 2006 film Black Sheep, a comedy exploring a range of lifestyles in Berlin.

In terms of TV roles, she’s been in the likes of Schimanski (Laura), Auf Herz und Nieren (Aysun), Nachtschicht (Dalida Abdullah), Löwenzahn (Banu), The Girlfriend Experience (Darya Esford), Never too Late for Justice (Samira Vaziri) and Hanna (Sima).

As for films, she most recently made waves for her phenomenal central performance in the acclaimed 2016 horror film Under the Shadow (Shideh), directed by Babak Anvari. Beloved film critic Mark Kermode cited it as one of his favourite films of the 2010s.

Other movie roles include Von glücklichen Schafen (Elmas), Kokowääh 2 (Verkäuferin), Dating Lanzelot (Zibaa), My Prince. My King (Fatima), Must Love Death (Isabel) and 2008’s Speed Racer (Persian Announcer), of which continues to be reappraised by audiences.
