Newcastle United’s long-awaited takeover still hasn’t gone through, but the new regime of the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund, Amanda Staveley and the Reuben brothers should be on board soon.
The £300million takeover should go through soon, with fans excited by the some of the rumours they’ve already heard about the new regime.
Whether it’s managers like Mauricio Pochettino and Massimiliano Allegri being linked, or players like Nabil Fekir, Edinson Cavani and Kalidou Koulibaly, big names are being touted for moves to St James’ Park.
Now, Marca claim that not only do Newcastle want Barcelona playmaker Philippe Coutinho, but also teammate Carles Alena in a double raid on the Catalan giants.
Everyone will know about Coutinho from his time at Liverpool, but Alena is more of an unknown quantity despite once being touted as the heir to Andres Iniesta in the Barca midfield.
The 22-year-old has been on the books with Barca since 2005, but has only managed 39 first-team appearances, and is now out on loan at Real Betis.
Alena clearly has potential, and he would give Newcastle a mobile playmaking option in midfield, whilst being able to operate as a number 10 or right-sided midfielder cutting inside onto his left foot.
Now, La Liga expert Graham Hunter has taken to Twitter to offer some insight, branding Alena a ‘good talent’, but thinks he needs plenty of playing time in order to mature – and it will be up to Newcastle to decide whether he can get that with them.
