Premier League underachievers Arsenal reportedly want to sign Hinteregger from Bundesliga high-flyers and Europa League rivals Eintracht Frankfurt.

Martin Hinteregger and Eintracht Frankfurt are a match made in footballing heaven.

The Austrian international centre-back has only been playing for the high-flying Eagles for ten months but it hasn’t taken him long to establish cult hero status amongst one of Germany’s most vociferous fanbases.

The Frankfurt supporters backed Hinteregger to the hilt after he missed a crucial penalty in the Europa League semi-final defeat to Chelsea last season and the former Augsburg outcast has rewarded their faith with a series of superb defensive performances in the early weeks of the 2019/20 campaign.

He’s even scored three goals in nine games from defence, including a typically thumping header in Saturday’s remarkable 5-1 thrashing of Bayern Munich.

The Sun (7 November, page 58) claims that underachieving Arsenal are hoping to strengthen their ailing backline with a £20 million January deal for Hinteregger but the Frankfurt faithful aren’t exactly waking up in a cold sweat, fretting about the future of their fans’ favourite.

Adi Hutter’s side have lost Sebastian Haller, Luka Jovic and Ante Rebic in the last few months but no one is worried that Hinteregger, a man who loves the club as much as they love him, will follow in their footsteps.
