The Sunderland striker put in another lacklustre display for the Black Cats as they were forced to settle for a replay in their Stadium of Light clash.
A number of Sunderland fans have been commenting on Twitter about their FA Cup draw at the Stadium of Light and Will Grigg came under some scrutiny following his performance on the day.
The Black Cats forward may have kicked on somewhat following Phil Parkinson’s arrival but on Saturday he put in another lacklustre performance – he did work hard, and one clever early flick almost reaped dividends for the hosts, but he was largely ineffective.
Parkinson ended up substituting him not long after the hour for Marc McNulty and several Sunderland fans took to social media to make their feelings known about the game, in particular regarding Grigg once again flattering to deceive:
Still the inability to kill teams off after taking lead….January needs to see back of Grigg and Wyke and get target man in neither of these can do it….a few more in squad should be off loaded aswell if anyone will take them #SAFC— ftm (@Safcftm2016) 9 November 2019
Grigg shouldn’t play another game for us like. #safc— Jordan Marrs (@marrs_jordan) 9 November 2019
I parted company with ninety-nine English pennies to download ‘Freed From Desire’ when Will Grigg signed in January, on the basis that it would be played every time he scored for us. I do think the club should refund my money, because he keeps drawing blanks. #SAFC ⚪️— Philip West (@Philip_RJ89) 9 November 2019
Struggling to see any positives at the minute. Needs to drop maguire and Grigg #SAFC— darksidemackem (@darksidemackem) 9 November 2019
On January 1st SAFC MUST do the the following.— Paul Summerside (@summerside49) 9 November 2019
1. Sell Grigg, Watmore.
2. Buy Maddison, Gnanduillet.
If this doesn’t happen then its play offs at best, and likely to be another year in League 1.
This will finish us as a club.
Another dreadful result and performance. For me Will Grigg wouldn’t even make the bench , better playing McNulty from the start. Bottom line is we are just not playing well and I can’t even see the green shoots of improvement. L1 side with a poor to average L1 manager— kevin defty (@kevindefty1) 9 November 2019
Played fist half with 10 men where was grigg omg what a waste of a shirt we can see it why can’t manager— Philip Bell ⚽⚪ (@blackcats666ftm) 9 November 2019
I’d have them in Sunday am and lay the law down …..since Ross left these players have let the club down badly …..I continue to be totally baffled with Grigg surely this new manager cannot keep picking him …..— Barrie Waller (@barrie_waller) 9 November 2019
Sunderland took the lead in the 15th minute when Aiden McGeady’s low shot from the edge of the area was misjudged by the Gills keeper, the ball going under his dive, but the visitors regained parity when Jon McLaughlin made an error of his own in the second half.
The Black Cats and Gillingham will take part in their replay in Kent a week on Tuesday, while the Black Cats are in EFL Trophy action away at Scunthorpe in midweek and then face Coventry at the Stadium of Light next weekend.
