Sunderland will have to replay their first round tie after the Black Cats were held to a draw at the Stadium of Light.

A number of Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to slam Jon McLaughlin for his latest blunder as the Black Cats played out a 1-1 draw against Gillingham in Saturday’s FA Cup first-round clash at the Stadium of Light.

The 32-year-old has made a number of errors in the past few months and, shortly after the restart, he spilled a free kick from Olly Lee straight to him, the ball trickling over the line to restore parity for the visitors.

Earlier in the game, a Gills goalkeeping mistake of their own gave Phil Parkinson’s side the lead, Jack Bonham misjudging the roll of the ball from Aiden McGeady’s low shot as it slowly went under his dive.

McLaughlin’s goalkeeping has come under scrutiny in other games this term, such as the win over MK Dons and the defeat to Lincoln, and with Lee Burge on standby, it remains to be seen what Parkinson opts to do with regards to the number one jersey.

Here is some of the Sunderland fan reaction to McLaughlin’s display and error:

Sunderland and Gillingham will take part in their replay in Kent a week on Tuesday, while the Black Cats are in EFL Trophy action away at Scunthorpe in midweek and then face Coventry at the Stadium of Light next weekend.
